Burundi previously colonized by Germany before World War I, and then Belgium. Independence on July 1, 1962, and took its current name. Prior to independence, Burundi is part of the Burundi-Rwanda, which included what is now the country Rwanda. Two months after independence, the country joined the United Nations. All is not well, however; Burundi elected president, Ndadaye, was assassinated in 1993, triggering civil war between two main ethnic groups, Hutu and Tutsi. An estimated 250,000 people were killed in tribal wars for control of the country. Burundi has one of the lowest per capital income in the world. Burundi is one of the poorest countries in Africa.
